“The American Dream is built on the idea that each person would be able to meet their essential human needs as well as their wildest dreams of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. To enact a dream, one cannot be caught in a cycle of survival wherein they are looking for their next meal, housing or worrying about keeping themselves and their loved ones healthy.
Yet Congress is on the brink of passing a bill which would force millions of people to choose between a doctor’s visit and a full meal—all while increasing the national debt by $4 trillion, giving tax cuts to billionaires, and funding increased detention and deportation of our immigrant neighbors.
As Christians, we will not allow the budget to be “balanced” on the backs of low-income communities. This budget reconciliation bill, if passed, would cause 10.1 million people to lose Medicaid coverage, and 4 million children to go hungry without SNAP benefits. It would also exclude over 2 million U.S. citizen children from the child tax credit because one of their parents is not a U.S. citizen, punishing children for their parents’ immigration status. Additionally, this bill would increase spending on the detention and deportation of our immigrant neighbors by over 40% while allowing the wealthy to skirt taxes on inherited investments and corporations to deduct even more in taxes.
By supporting this bill, our elected officials are allowing more children to go hungry, more sick people to die, and more of our sacred neighbors to lose their homes. The only ones who will benefit from this bill are those who have more than enough.
As the Senate prepares to vote on this legislation as daily costs continue to rise, tell Congress to vote NO on this budget reconciliation bill!” – UCC
The Strengthen the Church (STC) Offering reflects the shared commitment of people across the United Church of Christ to cooperatively build up the UCC. Conferences and the national setting equally share the gifts given by members and friends through their local congregations. The funds raised support leadership development, new churches, youth ministry, and innovation in existing congregations. By your generosity to this offering, you build up the Body of Christ.
As God calls our congregations to be the church in new ways, your generosity will plant new churches, awaken new ideas in existing churches and develop the spiritual life in our youth and young adults.
Brookmeade will collect the STC offering on Sunday, June 8th. You can send a check to the office, bring a check on Sunday, or donate online via Tithe.ly, choosing “STC Offering” in the drop-down menu.
Our next trip to the Project CURE Warehouse (2309 Clifton Ave, 37209) is scheduled for Saturday, June 7th from 9:30 am – 11:30 am. We will be sorting medical supplies. “As Mother’s Day approaches, we know that all our moms deserve much more financial, emotional, and physical support. Children are blessings, who model for us what it means to follow Jesus and help all of us see Christ’s love for the world.
Yet Congress is currently considering cutting the funding it provides for children and new parents. Cutting this funding would reduce assistance that helps children in families with low incomes get enough to eat, see a doctor when they are sick, and meet their basic needs and thrive. This assistance is essential for our children’s health and wellbeing.
Moms deserve to not have to worry about if they will be able to afford their child’s healthcare, or if they will be able to provide them with a filling meal. Yet in one of the richest countries in the world, our Congress is making these cuts to programs supporting children to fund tax cuts for billionaires. Tell Congress NO MORE sacrificing our moms and kids to line the pockets of the rich.” – UCC
